CHAPTER 6

Bessie filled my cup with steaming hot coffee. It smelled slightly burnt, but she’d assured me it wasn’t. “He what? That doesn’t sound like Merlock.”

“It was unnerving.” I added a splash of cream and sipped. “Oh, this is good.” I played it off like it was more a nuisance than terrorizing. I didn’t want Bessie worried any more than she already was.

She smiled. “Thank you. It’s got a pinch of toad feet in it. That’s what gives it the burnt smell. Charbroiling the toad is a pain, but it’s worth it.”

My mouth dropped open. I set the cup down and stared at it as my stomach churned.

Bessie laughed. “I’m kidding. It’s the vanilla. I don’t charbroil toads. That kind of thing only happens in your books, sweetie.”

I breathed in and picked up the cup once again. “That was mean.”

Her smile grew, engulfing the bottom half of her face. “It’s always fun to pick on the new witches.”

I narrowed my eyes at her. “Careful or I’ll make you disappear in a cloud of smoke, too.”

She sat at the table with me, her smile gone and her eyebrow raised as if to say, good luck with that. Neither Merlock nor Peter had come into the store yet.

“There was something strange in the air last night. I’ll give you that. But for Merlock to come at you, that’s highly inappropriate. He’s been warned about that kind of behavior, too. He must have had a really bad day.”

Inappropriate wasn’t the word I’d choose, but it wasn’t the time to debate adjectives. “The little nudge I’m getting telling me it’s not Samuel coming after me is getting stronger by the minute.”

She chewed on the side of her lip. “Oh honey, you can’t think it’s Merlock? He’s harmless.”

“He sure didn’t look harmless last night.”

Mr. Charming chirped away on Merlock’s chair and then broke into the Eagles “There’s a New Kid in Town” chorus, his impression of Glenn Frey disturbingly accurate. We watched him for a second like we did every time he sang a song from my mother’s favorite band.

“Anyway, Merlock can’t take your powers. He’s a shifter. It’s like trying to breed a cat and a dog. It’s just not possible.”

“Then why act all passive aggressive, threatening and then come after me like that?”

She sighed. “Like I said, he was probably having a bad day. Lord knows he’s done things like that before, just not in a while.”

I tilted my head. “What do you mean?”

Cooper hopped onto the table and stood on his hind legs. It amazed me how he could balance himself like that. Pretty talented cat.

“Coop, off.” I picked him up and plopped him onto the floor, but he jumped back onto the table again, ears up and claws out.

He stared at the front door. Bessie turned to see what had him on the defense, and I focused on the door, my muscles tightened, ready to jump from my seat and defend myself, waiting for it to blow open with someone or something ready to attack me.
